Our recommendations

A mudflat hike is almost a must for every Amrum vacationer. At low tide you can explore the Wadden Sea on foot. You can discover mudflat dwellers such as crabs and mussels, learn about the ecosystem and enjoy the unique landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique experience will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Amrum is located in the middle of the natural paradise “UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea”. This is home to an extraordinary wealth of species: around 10,000 different animals and plants live both on and around Amrum! On guided hikes, you can slow down, sharpen your senses and breathe in the salty sea air in unspoiled nature. Experience the rhythm of the tides in sunshine and North Sea weather.

Kniepsand on Amrum is a huge sandy beach up to 15 kilometers long that surrounds the island from the west. It stretches far into the sea and is constantly changing with the tides. Behind the Kniepsand rise the dunes, which are up to 32 meters high and protect the island from storm surges. Together they form an impressive natural backdrop that makes Amrum a unique travel destination.

Amrum is the most bird-rich North Sea island. The Vogelkiek on Amrum offers the opportunity to observe numerous bird species, such as oystercatchers and shelducks, especially during migration periods. Guided tours provide exciting information about the island’s birdlife and offer interesting insights into the birdlife and the importance of the island as a resting place for migratory birds.

The Öömrang Hüs is a historic Frisian house dating back to 1736 in Nebel on the island of Amrum. Today it serves as a museum and shows the traditional way of life of the Amrum Frisians. The thatched house with rooms furnished true to the original is an important cultural monument and offers insights into the history and architecture of the island.

The Amrum windmill is the oldest windmill in Schleswig-Holstein. It was built in 1771 on the highest point of the village. It is a historic gallery windmill on the island of Amrum, which now serves as a museum.

The Amrum lighthouse, built in 1875, is located on the island of Amrum in Schleswig-Holstein. At a height of 42 meters, it is one of the island’s most famous landmarks. The lighthouse can be climbed in the mornings during the summer months. From the viewing platform, you have a view of Amrum, the neighboring islands of Sylt and Föhr and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

There is something to see and marvel at everywhere on the island. Our route suggestions are particularly suitable for certain themes. These offer insights into the island’s nature, birdlife and culture and take you through picturesque landscapes.

The Amrumer Friesenbank-Weg consists of 30 benches, made from solid wooden planks by an Amrumer craftsman. Each Frisian bench is unique, individually designed with a small table, half a backrest for “gazing into each other’s eyes” or as a simple wooden bench.

Linger there, enjoy the beautiful view and learn a little “öömrang” at the same time – because each Frisian bench has been provided with a Frisian saying. The flyer with translations and meanings is available from the respective tourist information offices.
